Gopalaswami Parthasarthy was India's ambassador to several important countries and the UN, before becoming policy adviser on foreign and domestic affairs to two prime ministers.

Besides serving two terms as chairman of the International Commission for Supervision and Control in Cambodia and Vietnam during the late Fifties and early Sixties, "GP", as he was popularly known, was also head of the UN Security Council briefly in the late Sixties. Thereafter he headed the Security Council's Sanctions Committee on Rhodesia.

Parthasarthy is the only Indian diplomat to have served as ambassador to Pakistan and China, both countries with which India has been to war since independence 48 years ago. He ...
