Carl Giles was a phenomenon. At a time when most cartoonists
were striving for spontaneity, many of them experi- menting with
versions of the squiggle and doodle, he carried on composing his
cartoons like pictures, striving for accuracy in the settings, the
facial expressions, the body language, the tonality and the
textures.
As a household name whose annuals regularly topped the
best-seller lists at Christmas Giles would have been expected to
accept if not to court publicity, but he resolutely refused to be
interviewed and on the very rare occasions he capitulated gave
nothing away, not because he was shy but because he did not feel
