The screwball, like the dodo, is generally considered long
since extinct. A wildly exotic form of comedy, it is supposed not
to have survived the demise of its great practitioners: directors
such as Preston Sturges, Leo McCarey and Howard Hawks, and stars
like Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. From time to time, however,
something resembling screwball comedy flits through our cinemas.
Perhaps Joel Hershman's debut feature Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss
Me isn't quite the real thing, but it's a very passable imitation,
and allowances must be made. It was shot on a shoestring budget in
a trailer park in California, with two major stars, a Great Dane, a
porno actress and Timothy Leary leading the cast, ...
