John Jennings, 77, an associate commissioner for medical affairs
at the Food and Drug Association who left in 1978 to become an
executive with what is now the Pharmaceutical Research and
Manufacturers of America, died of cancer Aug. 24 at the home of a
friend in Alexandria. He had homes in the District and Woodstock, Va.
Dr. Jennings joined the FDA in 1964 as one of the first medical
officers following passage of drug law amendments in 1962 mandating
that new drugs be reviewed for effectiveness in addition to safety.
In 1969, he was acting director of what became the bureau of drugs
and then served his last eight years as associate commissioner.
