If given the chance, the Baltimore Orioles undoubtedly would take
the 16 extra victories in a straight-up swap of won-lost records with
the Boston Red Sox. But beyond that superficial disparity, the
Orioles would not want to trade places with their division rivals.
The Red Sox's extra wins have come at a terrible cost, one the
Orioles could do without.
One night after the youthful Orioles eliminated them from the
playoff race, the Red Sox battered them in a 9-6 victory at Fenway
Park. The victory was just the fifth in the Red Sox's last 23 games,
but it prevented them from falling back to .500 for the first time
since April 6, when they were 2-2.
