Rene Clement's Les Jeux interdits won the Grand Prix at the
Venice Film Festival of 1952, and went on to become that year's
"The Best Film from Any Source" (the British Film Academy; or
Bafta, as it now is) and Best Foreign Language Film (the American
Academy). Yet over 40 years on, with "Best Movie" lists
proliferating as a result of the centenary of the cinema, it has
hardly been mentioned.
Clement stands with Vittorio De Sica as one of the two great
enigmas of European cinema. By common agreement the two "great"
directors of the immediate post-war period, humanist and
uncompromising, they both fell stunningly from grace with films,
