The deselection of Sir George Gardiner, one-time chairman of the right-wing 1992 Committee would be welcomed by many in the Tory party. A conspiratorial figure, for ever to be seen haunting the passages of Westminster, seeking the election of his friends to the officership of some party committee, he does tend to look the part.
