The deselection of Sir George Gardiner, one-time chairman of
the right-wing 1992 Committee would be welcomed by many in the Tory
party. A conspiratorial figure, for ever to be seen haunting the
passages of Westminster, seeking the election of his friends to the
officership of some party committee, he does tend to look the part.
Lugubrious as well as conspiratorial, Sir George has been a pillar
of the right for as long as I can recall.
His constituency association has passed by 15 votes to 14 a
resolution that seeks to invite others to come before a selection
committee; Sir George's response has been to threaten to apply to
the Chiltern Hundreds (the parliamentary terminology for ...
