" Red wine is the most effective drug yet discovered for the
prevention of heart disease," insists Dr Serge Renaud of the French
National Institute for Health and Medical Research. He believes a
moderate daily intake of red wine provides 30-40 per cent more
protection against heart disease than beer or spirits (themselves,
in moderate doses, thought to reduce the chances of a heart attack
by 40 per cent because of their alcohol content).
The idea that moderate consumption of alcohol (say, one to three
glasses a day) helps protect us from heart disease isn't exactly
new. Far more surprising is the claim that red wine in particular
