The technical credits for Disney's new animated feature are like the census of a small country. The list goes on and on, of Compositors, In-Betweeners, Colour Stylist Trainees, and it would be nice to report that these myriad artisans have collaborated on a cathedral worthy of so much effort. In fact, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a mild disappointment; not a disaster but a definite falling off from the studio's series of recent triumphs, running from Beauty and the Beast in 1991.

Part of the problem is technical. The animation looks old-fashioned and even crude after breakthroughs in computer animation (Toy Story) and stop- motion (The Nightmare Before Christmas). Oh sure, crowds seen ...
