Principal's Credo: No Excuse for Failure; Williams Honored For Work With Raymond Pupils

At the District's Raymond Elementary School, almost all of the students are from low-income families. A growing number are children of immigrants who speak little or no English and have limited educations. Some live in a homeless shelter.

Those issues often translate into academic distress. But at Raymond, Principal Timothy L. Williams does not accept failure from students with such backgrounds, according to parents and administrators. He finds ways to motivate students and staff, they said, and has steadily driven up achievement test scores.
