Dear Dr. Fox:

Is there a limit to the number of times in one year that a cat can get pregnant? Our calico stray has had four litters this past year! I don't think I could take another one without going batty. Please, I need your help!

Four litters in one year must certainly be a record. Most cats average two. You have brought this dilemma on yourself. You are a good Samaritan for caring for a calico stray, but you are at the same time contributing to the pet overpopulation problem by letting her have litter after litter.

Your most logical choice is to have the cat spayed as soon as possible. That's certainly better than putting all her kittens to sleep, or going batty. ...
