And so Valery Gergiev, famed conductor of the Kirov Opera in St
Petersburg, finally made it to his Proms debut on Friday. He
arrived with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra - he was
appointed its principal conductor last year - and together they
made sweet music. Well, not all of it was sweet, but for Gergiev,
standing on the podium at the end of the evening and drinking in
the adulation, the glamour certainly was.
Swarthy and unshaven, dark hair streaming every which way, he
cuts a dashing figure. How the good Rotterdamers see it may be
another matter. Though their ensemble was strong, and their
playing often sparkled, it was not without its moments of
