Agriculture Minister Douglas Hogg was mobbed yesterday by angry
farmers after refusing to discuss the BSE crisis.
More than 500 placard-waving farmers barricaded him in the
building where he was holding a news conference at the South West
Dairy show in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.
For 20 minutes he was virtually held prisoner while the farmers
chanted "Hogg out, Hogg out". He only escaped after police
reinforcements were drafted in to escort him through the hostile
crowd. A police spokesman said: "There was some jostling, but the
minster is safe and well and his schedule was not interrupted."
A National Farmers' Union spokesman replied: "We are calling for
the resignation of Douglas Hogg ...
