U.S. Navy officials, pleased with the lifting of the Japanese
fishing boat Ehime Maru from the seafloor, say the vessel may reach
its shallow-water recovery site as early as Sunday.
The boat, which sank Feb. 9 after it was struck by the rapidly
surfacing USS Greeneville during a drill, was lifted Friday from its
muddy resting place 2,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific.
"The operation is going extremely well, and everyone involved is
highly motivated. But we're not out of the woods yet," said Navy Lt.
Cmdr. Gregg Baumann.
In a risky and unprecedented maneuver, the civilian salvage ship
Rockwater 2 is carrying the trawler about 16 miles to a shallow-
