Article: '84 Charing Cross Rd' author dies

Helene Hanff, author of the best-seller 84 Charing Cross Road, has died of pneumonia, aged 80.

Sheila Murphy, of Hanff's publishers Aurum Press, said the author died on Wednesday afternoon in New York City.

Hanff captured the hearts of thousands by charting her correspondence from New York with an antiquarian bookseller in London between 1949 and 1969. The letters between the two ceased when bookseller, Frank Doel, died. The success of the book, first published in 1971, led to its adaptation as a televisifelt to visit the city for the first time.
