Another Child Under D.C.'s Protection Dies; Social Worker Did Not Visit Family for Seven Months, Was Unaware of Baby's Birth, Sources Say

An infant whose family was under the watch of the District's child
protection system died last week after a city social worker failed to
visit the family for at least seven months, D.C. child protection
sources said yesterday.
Authorities are investigating the cause of death of 2-month-old
Shawn Hodge, who died Friday. One city government source said the
baby was malnourished. His mother said in an interview yesterday that
Shawn had not gained weight since his birth in August.
Shawn's death comes as city officials and federal lawmakers are
trying to overhaul the District's troubled child protection system,
which recently returned to city control after six years of federal
court oversight.
