Alan Mullery, the first player to be sent off playing for England,
has told David Beckham he will have to live with his St Etienne
dismissal for the rest of his career.
But Ray Wilkins, the last England player to be sent off in a World
Cup game before Beckham, last night spoke up for the Manchester
United star and called for him to be treated with "kid gloves".
Mullery made history 20 years ago as the first England
international to be dismissed and the stigma has lived with the
former Fulham and Tottenham captain ever since.
