THE BBC has launched a major campaign, using its licence fee money
to persuade policy-deciders that it should be allowed to use public
subsidy to compete head-to-head with private sector broadcasters in
all the areas being opened up by new technology.
You can hear the BBC lobby being mobilised as it prepares itself
for the next millennium. As a former BBC journalist, I admire the
corporation. I know from work in dictatorship countries around the
world the importance of the World Service as a flagship for both
Britain and democratic values.
Yet the BBC's new campaign of persuasion would carry more weight
