Jan Ullrich had to lose the pounds as quickly as fellow German Claudia Schiffer sheds her clothes in the Citroen advert as he prepared to defend his Tour de France title.

The question many of his rivals are asking is whether the weight reduction has left Ullrich fighting fit. All will be revealed when the Tour gets under way today with a short prologue around the streets of Dublin.
