AS WITH many of history's miserable sinners, it was to the Bible
that Jonathan Aitken turned in his moment of apparent repentance.
In an extraordinary article to be published today, Belmarsh
Prison's celebrity inmate quotes from the Old Testament in an attempt
to highlight what he claims is genuine contrition.
"I am a man of unclean lips," says Aitken, sentenced to 18 months'
imprisonment by the Old Bailey on Tuesday after pleading guilty to
perjury and perverting the course of justice.
Referring to Isaiah 6:1-8, in which the prophet is purified by a
burning coal placed in his mouth, Aitken continues: "Surely there are
times when such suffering has to be part of the repentance."
