"GEE, IT'S totally awesome," said the young American sitting next
to me, surveying the Royal Albert Hall. And then, pointing down at
the Arena: "Look, that's where they put the poor people." Proms
regulars can easily forget just how "awesome" the experience must be
for the newcomer. The almost- in-the-round seating encourages a
special feeling of camaraderie, particularly when - as during last
Thursday's late-night concert of French sacred choral music - a large
audience listens with a rare, rapt attention.
This programme - given, with both passion and polish, by the
Sixteen and the BBC Philharmonic under Harry Christophers - concluded
