P ants are the new dung for this year's Turner Prize. But Tracey
Emin is not quite Chris Ofili, at least not for the critics. Last
year they were amused by Ofili's dung-decorated paintings, but Emin
they hate. They find her boring. They really are fed up with her. Yet
it's her they really want to devote the column inches to this year.
Why? Maybe it's because with her there's something to talk about.
Through her the critics can make a shape out of what they would
otherwise experience as an emptiness - that is, the Turner Prize
itself and the world of contemporary art it stands for. Emin offers
some content whereas the others in the show don't seem to. It's true
