In the back room of a funky West Village bar where "The Beat" was
re-shooting a few scenes, writer-executive producer Tom Fontana was
busy watching the action through a monitor. Still, he was eager to
talk about his latest endeavor, a television series that has all the
contradictory elements that define the affable 48-year-old Buffalo
native's work.
Fontana is best known for his seven-year stint with the much-
awarded "Homicide: Life on the Street" (one Emmy Award, two Writer's
Guild Awards, four Television Critics Association Awards and three
Peabody Awards). Fontana also was a writer on "St. Elsewhere" and is
penning "Oz," the gritty prison show airing on HBO. His partner is
