It's been a great year for American ballet in Britain. We've had
the New York Ballet Stars, we've had Pacific Northwest, and now comes
the venerable San Francisco Ballet, trailing yards of hype. As the
oldest of all the US companies and with 70 dancers picked from round
the globe, you'd expect a goodish standard. But SFB are even better
than they'd said they'd be. Handsome, crisply drilled, bursting with
American pizazz, these dancers could persuade you that classical
style had just been invented.
A strong programme helps, and I've rarely been made to feel so
happy and replete by a mixed bill. The taster was a dazzling blast of
Balanchine at his grandest - Tchaikovsky, frosted silver tutus ...
