SIXTH-FORMERS at a community high school are preparing for
university - by studying OU courses. For the last four years
Monkseaton School, Whitley Bay, has been the subject of a pilot
scheme to introduce pupils to OU study. Now an OU working group is
reviewing the experience to decide where to go from there.
In the first year of the pilot, pioneered with the OU In The
North, ten sixth formers took the half-credit Open Mathematics and
achieved five passes and five distinctions. In 1998, Discovering
Science, a full credit course, was also offered. Next year, You, Your
Computer and the Net is added to the list, attracting staff and
parents to study alongside the sixth formers.
