Gregory Hersov's underpowered, medieval-style production at the
Royal Exchange Theatre follows a spate of Lears, including Barrie
Rutter's for Northern Broadsides, the proscenium version with Alan
Howard at the Old Vic and the acclaimed production with Ian Holm at
the Cottesloe.
Who's In It?
Tom Courtenay's astonishingly low-key Lear has divided critics.
While some have pointed to the added dimension which a character
actor of Courtenay's stature can bring to the role, others have
lamented the absence of heroism in his portrayal.
