Aserious ankle injury typically would mark the end of a career, but for Fred Turok it was just the beginning. When his joint gave way in 1996, it was a devastating blow for the former teacher who founded LA Fitness, the health club chain. A self-confessed control freak, he would endure a gruelling regime involving 20 aerobics sessions a day because nobody could be trusted to take classes as well as him.

Every day, his motorbike took him across London and back to ensure that each of his three clubs in Kingston, the City and Westminster were running in step. It's a wonder his ankle lasted as long as it did.
