These are frustrating times for Jim Hodkinson, chief executive of New Look, the cut-priced women's fashion retailer. In theory, his company should be one of the high street winners as bargain-hunting shoppers seek out the best prices in these value-conscious times.

But in practice, the former B&Q chairman finds New Look shares trading at a substantial discount to the issue price when the group floated on the market 18 months ago. The shares, which were priced at 165p in June 1998, peaked at almost 245p last summer, but stood yesterday at just 129p.
