GEORGE W BUSH is preparing for an all-out effort to crush his
rival John McCain in the New Hampshire primary. The leading
Republican candidate believes he can beat Mr McCain in the hotly
contested vote on 1 February and effectively wrap up the contest for
the party's White House nomination in the first week of campaigning.
Yesterday the Texas governor was in Iowa, which votes in precinct
caucuses - the candidates' first test - in a week's time. But his
campaign will then swing swiftly back to New Hampshire. Lavish
amounts of staff, television advertisements and other resources are
being poured into the state, where he is slightly behind. The boyish
