They were queuing 10 deep outside the Gucci store on Via
Tornabuoni last weekend for the first day of the winter sale. An
immaculately groomed, tanned and besuited assistant manned the door,
ensuring that nobody entered until somebody else left the overcrowded
store. Not that they looked like people in need of a discount, those
well-fed Florentines and American tourists in their furs and
cashmere. But even in a city as wealthy and chic as Florence, fashion
die-hards cannot afford to ignore a bargain when it comes to that
particular luxury brand. A 30 per cent reduction is not to be sniffed
at when your cheapest cotton shirt costs pounds 180 and a leather
coat fetches 10 times that amount. ...
