House of Lords: Report is sell-out to the ruling class, say Lib Dems

THE ROYAL Commission report on Lords reform was attacked as a "sell out" and rubbished by critics who want a directly elected upper chamber.

The widespread criticism made it more likely that the report would be ignored by Mr Blair, although his spokesman said the Prime Minister had assured Cabinet that there was "no question of shelving the Wakeham report".

William Hague, the Tory leader, said the proposal for an elected element of 20 to 40 per cent did not go far enough. Mr Blair "wanted to neuter the House of Lords so it was more compliant with the Government", he said.

Robert Maclennan, Liberal Democrat spokesman on constitutional affairs, said it was a "sell-out to the establishment. ...
