FIFA'S TECHNICAL inspection team gave South Africa's bid to host
the 2006 World Cup finals a warm and positive response after a five-
day tour to check the country's readiness.
"We have been very favourably impressed with the written proposals
and with this site inspection," Alan Rothenberg, the leader of the
six-man delegation from football's world governing body, said at a
news conference on Robben Island, Nelson Mandela's prison for 18
years. "It is definitely a very positive reaction we have come away
with," he added, praising the professionalism, dedication and
enthusiasm the team had met from government ministers to ordinary
fans.
