WHEN I was a child, I knew that there was abstract painting, but I
didn't know what you called painting that wasn't abstract. And of
course this was a practical problem for art people early in the 20th
century, when abstract painting arrived. Painting that looked like
something, previously just "painting", was now a sub-class of
painting. Non-abstract? A more positive term was needed. They came up
with the horrible word "representational". And eventually I came
across that word too, and it was a great relief. Then later
I met "figurative".
"Figurative" is a tricky one. You may see advertised "an
exhibition of recent figurative paintings" or hear speculation about
"a revival of figurative ...
