GORDON BROWN again hit owners and potential buyers of the most expensive properties with a rise in stamp duty. In his Budget speech, the Chancellor also announced a review of stamp duty on houses built on brownfield - or recycled - land, a measure aimed at boosting urban regeneration.

Stamp duty - a tax paid by buyers of property - was raised on property costing pounds 250,000 or more from 2.5 to 3 per cent. On property costing more than pounds 500,000, the duty was increased from 3.5 to 4 per cent.
