AUSTRIAN CRISIS: Haider's deal lets his party join the ruling coalition International pressure mounts on Vienna to exclude far right from power as ministers denounce meddling by `foreigners'

JoRG HAIDER was due to announce last night that he had struck a coalition deal with the conservative People's Party, paving the way for a West European government to include the far right for the first time since the Second World War.

Wolfgang Schussel the Foreign Minister and People's Party leader, is to head an administration that will not include Mr Haider, but will doubtless be dominated by his strong personality. Mr Haider's Freedom Party scooped 27 per cent of the votes in last October's elections with the help of xenophobic campaign slogans.

The other 14 states in the EU announced on Monday that they would refuse all bilateral contacts if Mr Haider's party joined the government.
