SAM MENDES' study of mid-life crisis and suburban family
dysfunction, American Beauty, topped the list of Oscar nominations
yesterday, making the shortlist in eight categories including best
picture, best director, best actor (Kevin Spacey), best actress
(Annette Bening) and best original screenplay (Alan Ball).
It was joined in the best picture category by The Cider House
Rules, Lasse Hallstrom's adaptation of the John Irving novel; The
Insider, Michael Mann's gripping real-life tale of a tobacco industry
whistle-blower and his struggle against corporate America; The Sixth
Sense, M Night Shyamalan's ghost story that has hit box-office gold;
and The Green Mile, a supernatural prison drama ...
