If David O Russell's Gulf war movie Three Kings were designed
simply to convey the anarchic nature of conflict, it would have to be
deemed a blinding success. I left the cinema with roughly the same
information on the war as I went in with, ie very little. Places,
names, strategies, territorial gains and losses, political
implications: these remain as mysterious to us as they apparently did
to the average American soldier stationed in the Gulf. There is a
brief glimpse of a map, but its crude markings might just as well be
a guide to Mars as to Iraq.
Yet as to what those soldiers might feel, dislocated and confused
and vaguely bored in a country they neither like nor understand, the
film ...
