Sir: As the spotlight shone for once on the plight of Poles
deported to Russia and Polish officers killed in Katyn, H Silver
(letter, 10 April) felt compelled to divert the debate to the issue
of Polish-Jewish relations.
I can follow in the footsteps of President Lech Walesa at the
Knesset in expressing a deeply-felt apology for the persecution
suffered by Jews at the hands of certain bigoted and cowardly Poles.
There is little to excuse acts such as the pre-Second World War
boycotts of Jewish businesses, the wartime anti-Semitic atrocities of
Polish nationalists partisans, the murderous post-war pogroms, or the
