MARY PIERCE, the woman who feared the French Open was going to be
a "never, never" occasion for her, took a tearful but determined grip
on the Suzanne Lenglen Trophy in Paris yesterday after defeating
Conchita Martinez 6-2 7-5.
So Pierce, who has a French mother and has represented the country
in world team competition, finally gained possession of the Grand
Slam which means most to her in her 11th year of trying.
Though the 25-year-old Pierce, born in Canada and raised in the
United States, has drifted away from French connections and
involvement recently, the crowd, starved of success at their home
event, greeted "Maree" as one of their own. She was the first from
