A part of the Beatles heritage trail went missing last weekend
when the wrought iron gates that guard John Lennon's beloved
Strawberry Fields were stolen. The Salvation Army girls' reform
school in Liverpool was immortalised in Lennon's `Strawberry Fields
Forever'.
Where were they then,
Those gates to Strawberry Fields?
Sat cold with other stolen goods
Waiting in a warehouse to be crated,
Driven to the docks in a container,
Shipped across the sea somewhere,
Reclassified as bona-fide antiques
For some millionaire collector who,
Dawdling over drinks in a casino
And mad as a lava lamp, licked lips
Anticipating this, his latest acquisition.
The solid northern wrought-iron gates
