GRAEME HICK became the first Zimbabwean to score a Test hundred at
Lord's yesterday. He was playing for England, of course, but that did
not diminish the achievement. Or so most of us in a modest crowd
thought. But, soon after he was out for 101, Hick appeared on
television and announced that this was not how it seemed to him. "I
don't count myself as a Zimbabwean," he said. His mother, who still
lives in Harare, could be forgiven if she shed a little tear.
Hick's reaction undermines Duncan Fletcher's assertion that the
batsman looks more comfortable with himself. Fletcher is credited
with having engineered a transformation in his fellow countryman. (Or
