Article: Japanese are top of the league for long, healthy life

THE JAPANESE have the longest healthy life expectancy in the world, with the British having nearly three years less of the good life, according to a World Health Organisation report published today.

Of 191 countries surveyed last year, the Japanese could expect 74.5 years of healthy life, whereas Sierra Leoneans - the lowest- ranking - could expect a healthy life for only 26 years. Britain ranked 14th, with an average life expectancy of 71.7 years.

This is the first time WHO has ranked countries by healthy life expectancy - the expected number of years to be lived in "full health". Previously, life expectancy estimates have been based on overall length of life only. In the system used by ...
