One Woody Allen picture, Sweet and Lowdown, is just opening in
London, yet the next one, Small Time Crooks, is already on release in
America. He's too restless for our leisurely system. But is he
passionate about it? This December, Allen will be 65, an unusually
advanced age for film-makers. Mike Nichols is close to 70, and Robert
Altman is as much as 75. But Altman is not simply a rogue to the
herd; he's a great director and an intractable spirit who works out
of mood and need. Whereas Allen works chronically, as if trying to
