Article: Gore chooses Orthodox Jew as his running mate

VICE-PRESIDENT Al Gore injected much-needed excitement into his lacklustre campaign for the White House yesterday by selecting Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman, an Orthodox Jew, as his running mate. Mr Lieberman, who is 58 and politically moderate, will be the first Jew to run on the presidential ticket for a major party.

Mr Lieberman said Mr Gore telephoned him shortly after midday to ask if he would do him the honour of running with him. "I said, `Believe me, it's my honour. I'm humbled, I'm grateful, I'm proud and I'm excited because I believe in you'."

The choice was immediately hailed as a shrewd risk that could signal a turning point in Mr Gore's halting bid for the White House. ...
