Many of the survivors of the Holocaust abandoned religious belief
entirely. But the rabbinical leaders of the haredi world who had
survived found that the Jews - including close to 1,000,000 murdered
babies and children - were being punished by that "benevolent, Jew-
loving" God for the religious sins they and their immediate forbears
had committed. The foul-mouthed buffoon, Ovadia Yosef, who repeated
these monstrosities in his weekly drasha Saturday night was not being
original at all. I make a point of never calling Ovadia Yosef
"rabbi". That is because, as a secular Jew with a developed sense of
Jewish history, I have a deep sense of respect for the title rabbi.
