Any hapless traveller venturing on to Britain's roads next weekend
for a trip to the seaside or a sports fixture has a good chance of
encountering traffic jams, crowded car parks and queues. And why?
Because it is, of course, the Summer Bank Holiday - the holiday that
effectively marks the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. The
Summer Bank Holiday, along with New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter
Monday, the May Day Holiday, the Spring Holiday (ex Whitsun),
Christmas Day and Boxing Day, makes up our full tally of just eight
bank holidays. (Scotland has, of course, an extra day to recover from
the New Year's celebrations.)
This sum is miserly by international standards, ...
