THE EDITORIAL coverage of Aids in The Independent is contradictory. You blame the Catholic church's stance on condoms for the HIV/Aids pandemic in Africa. You then argue that the church's position is widely ignored. You can't have it both ways.

To say that condoms are the sole and simple solution to HIV/Aids in Africa is wrong and misleading. Condoms are obtainable in many African countries; European aid programmes pay for them. Nevertheless, HIV/Aids infection rates continue to rise alarmingly there. Even in the US and Britain there have been increases in the rate of infections in certain groups, despite condoms being freely available.
