Ciena Corp. earned $9.1 million (6 cents a share) in its fiscal
first quarter, compared with a $1.9 million loss for the same period
last year, the company said yesterday.
Revenue for the Linthicum, Md.-based fiber optic-systems maker was
$152.2 million for the quarter ended Jan. 31, compared with $100.4
million for the quarter the year before.
Ciena's shares closed down $4.12 1/2 before the announcement, at
$113.56 1/4, in heavy trading. Earnings were in line with Wall
Street's expectations.
Patrick H. Nettles, president and chief executive of Ciena,
attributed the 52 percent year-over-year revenue growth to a growing
