Bill Bradley is likely to abandon his Democratic race for
president if he does not score significant victories in the spate of
primaries on March 7, senior campaign officials said today.
That would save Vice President Gore from an expensive, nasty slog
toward this summer's convention--a fight that could hobble him going
into the general election against the Republican nominee.
In January, right before the Iowa caucuses, Bradley said he wanted
to take his fight to the nominating convention, as Sen. Edward M.
Kennedy (D-Mass.) had done in 1980. That remark created some serious
concern among party leaders.
Bradley and his staff have long said he must do well on March 7,
