When the first proud "pet passport" bearers made the short journey
through the Channel Tunnel earlier this year, wagging their tails and
lolling their tongues with joy, they were accompanied by a faintly
nauseating chorus of "Aaah". After years of prohibitive quarantine
laws, a nation of animal sentimentalists was finally free from the
guilty need to imprison its furry friends in kennels each time it
took a holiday. Instead, millions of little pedigree chums could be
packed into the back of the car along with the cooler box and the
